How Cognitive Load Shapes Crisis Counseling

What happens when crisis counselors are stretched too thin? This presentation will illuminate the real-time pressures counselors face and what’s at stake when their capacity is exceeded. Meghan Takahashi shares findings from a large-scale study of regional text-based crisis counseling data, examining how multitasking—measured by simultaneous chats and message volume—affects response times, suicide risk assessments, and client engagement.
About Presenter
Meghan Takahashi is a research assistant professor and associate director at the University of Utah College of Social Work’s Social Research Institute, where she leads large-scale evaluations and applied research to improve social service systems.
